Jonathan Barry was born in Henfield, Sussex. He took his degree in English at Cambridge, and went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music. After several years as a freelance baritone, he went to Naples, Italy for further study . He continued his career there, singing first performances with Roberto de Simone, Baroque music with Antonio Florio, and later, as soloist and in the chorus at the San Carlo Opera House in Naples.

He has continued to sing operatic roles in Italy and the UK, returning to The Maltings, Aldeburgh to sing the title role in 'Falstaff' with Steuart Bedford as conductor in 1990. As a concert singer, he has performed in nearly every major Italian city.
Since he founded the Vox Lirika Association in 1998, he has conducted and produced and sometimes sung in all the productions.
The company now has its base in London.
